Assistant dean joins College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
Jennifer Posener is the new assistant dean for the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at AU, effective Monday, Aug. 3.
“Jennifer is passionate about her commitment to undergraduate student success,” said Dr. Mary McGee, dean of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, in announcing Posener’s appointment. “She sees student advising as a key factor in the retention and success of many students. Jennifer will be a wonderful addition to our college and staff, bringing with her experience, energy, insights and ideas that will allow us to strengthen our support of students as well as faculty.”
Princeton Review reports AU ‘one of best’ for undergraduate education
The 2010 edition of The Princeton Review Guidebook: “The Best 371 Colleges” lists Alfred University as “one of the country’s best institutions for undergraduate education.” The University’s radio station, WALF-FM, is also ranked in the book as 13th best out of the 371 colleges and universities included in the guide.
Fiske Guide rates Alfred University as a ‘best buy,’ one of 44 in nation
Alfred University is one of only 44 colleges and universities included in the 2010 edition of Fiske’s 2010 Top Financial Finds on the College Tuition Market. There are 4,200 institutions of higher education in the country, so inclusion in the Fiske Guide as a “best buy” places Alfred University in the top one percent in value for price.
Alfred University is among more than 500 institutions of higher learning nationwide committed to participating in a federal program that will allow military veterans to attend college at significantly reduced expense.
Alfred University awards 118 master’s degrees during downstate commencement
They are masters of their futures, Brigadier General Robert L. “Steve” Stephens (retired) told 118 graduates who received their master’s degrees in education from Alfred University during commencement ceremonies today at Kingsborough Community College.
Alumnus to deliver address at downstate commencement
One hundred and eighteen students who have completed their requirements for master’s degree from Alfred University through a downstate program offered through the Center for Integrated Teacher Education in New York City will graduate Saturday, June 20, in a ceremony in the rotunda at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn. The speaker will again be Brigadier General Robert L. “Steve” Stephens (U.S. Army retired), an Alfred University alumnus who joined the University’s Board of Trustees in 2007. Stephens is now vice president of External Relations and executive assistant to the president of Clayton State University in Georgia.
‘Bicycle library’ to open this fall
Beginning this fall, members of the Alfred University community will be able to “check out” a bicycle, just as they would a book at Herrick Library.
The Alfred University Bicycle Lending program, the brainchild of AU student Ian Cramer, will begin with the fall 2009 semester and will initially make 20 hybrid (on-road/off-road) bicycles available to AU students, faculty and staff for a nominal fee.
Children’s Learning Initiative reaches 600-plus students during academic year
As its first year of partnership with the ACCORD (Allegany County Community Opportunities and Rural Development) Corp. of Allegany County draws to a close, the Children and Youth Learning Initiative (CYLI) at Alfred University reports it has offered 29 programs to more than 600 middle and high school students from Allegany and western Steuben counties.
Governor urges Alfred University graduates: ‘Stay in New York, work along with us’
Their future is “right here in New York State,” Governor David A. Paterson told the 490 graduates of Alfred University who received their degrees this morning during AU’s annual commencement. Paterson delivered the commencement address and received a Doctor of Humane Laws degree, honoris causa.
Phi Beta Kappa chapter inducts new members
Alfred University’s Alpha Gamma Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa initiated 17 students and two faculty members during its annual induction ceremonies. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is considered to be among the most prestigious of honor societies, and is dedicated “to the ideal of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences.” To be eligible to have a Phi Beta Kappa chapter, Colleges of Liberal Arts & Sciences must meet the society’s rigorous academic standards and be approved by the membership. There are fewer than 300 colleges – roughly 15 percent – nationwide that have been granted a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Alfred University was awarded a chapter in 2003, and installed its first members in April 2004.
Professor receives distinguished ACE fellowship
Dr. Nancy J. Evangelista, professor and chair of the Division of Counseling and School Psychology at Alfred University, has been chosen to participate in the American Council on Education Fellows Program for 2009-10. Evangelista, who has taught in Alfred University’s School Psychology programs since 1997, is one of only 44 educators selected from a nationwide pool of candidates to participate in this year’s ACE Fellowship Program.
Paterson to speak at AU commencement
Gov. David Paterson will deliver the address at Alfred University’s annual commencement at 10 a.m. May 16 in McLane Center. The University will recognize Paterson as someone who has broken barriers, personally and professionally, as the first African-American and the first legally blind person to serve as New York’s governor.
LaCourse develops technology for super-strong glass
Wine glasses that don’t shatter? Baby bottles that don’t break? Coffee mugs that last generations? Dr. William C. LaCourse, professor of glass science, has developed a process for strengthening household glass and ceramic wares so they are nearly unbreakable – even when dropped from 10 feet onto a concrete floor. The process allows Santanoni – a company founded by LaCourse – to produce “unbreakable” glassware such as wine glasses, canning jars, bottles, tumblers, goblets and mugs at a cost that allows the products to be competitive with normal, un-strengthened glassware.
Investigators probe AU’s compliance to Title IX requirements
An investigator from the federal Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights will be conducting a routine investigation into Alfred University’s compliance with Title IX, the Equal Opportunity for Education Act, adopted in 1972. Alfred University was notified by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights that it would be conducting a series of on-campus interviews in April as part of a routine investigation into a complaint the University has violated Title IX requirements.
Faculty receive accolades at Honors Convocation
Dr. William Carty, professor of ceramic engineering in the Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering at Alfred University, received not one, but two, Excellence in Teaching Awards during the University’s annual Honors Convocation. And it’s the second time he’s won double honors. This year, as he did in 2006, Carty received the John F. McMahon Award for Excellence in Teaching, an honor reserved for those who teach in the University’s statutory engineering programs, and a Joseph Kruson Trust Fund Award for Excellence in Teaching, a University-wide honor.
Rich receives Corning Foundation Fellowship
John Rich ‘06, a student in the Ph.D. program in Glass Science in the Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering at Alfred University, has been named a Corning Incorporated Foundation Science Fellow. Rich was selected by a faculty committee from among the Ph.D. students enrolled in the Inamori School of Engineering, based on his academic performance and research proposal, according to Dr. Doreen Edwards, associate dean and director of graduate education. Dr. James E. Shelby, professor of Glass Science, is advising Rich.
Alfred creates Confucius Institute
Alfred University’s College of Business joins a select group of colleges and universities internationally as host to a Confucius Institute, devoted to promoting Chinese language and culture through education. Dr. Wilfred V Huang, professor of management in the College of Business, will serve as director of the Alfred University Confucius Institute, one of just over 200 worldwide and one of only 47 in the United States. The Institute at Alfred University is one of three in New York State.
