Much of the news coverage of Hurricane Sandy focused on the loss of lives, neighborhoods, homes, and possessions. But there are more losses that went unnoticed by the public until the weeks went by and the clean-up got under way in earnest.

It’s that time of year … yes, for shopping, and cookie baking, and honoring party invites. It’s also that time of year when we see and hear numerous stories of food drives, warm clothing collections, and Santa’s helpers and giving angels in our communities.

Diana Cooper, a New York City-based artist who was working at Alfred University when Hurricane Sandy struck, faced a devastating loss of much of the work she'd made when water flooded the basement where her art was stored.
