Less than three years ago, Nick Clark was certain that his football playing days would end after his senior season at Alfred University. The Saxons’ standout linebacker — who had earned Empire 8 all-conference recognition as a freshman and sophomore at AU — had begun making plans to seek a graduate assistant’s coaching position after wrapping up his career at Alfred.

It’s virtually impossible not to get caught up in Leslie Fetzer’s love of and enthusiasm for teaching. That’s why it’s understandable that Fetzer was named North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) Teacher of the Year last fall.
The High School for Environmental Studies (HSES) may be located in the heart of New York City, but its mission is to educate young adults with a special appreciation for the world outside their distinctly urban environment. To say that Matthew Washington ’04 was destined to be an integral part of the school’s unique mission would not be an exaggeration. It just so happens that is where he attended high school, and the path that led him back to serve his community included four very special years at Alfred University.
Giving back. Paying it forward. Volunteering. Using your talents. Reaching out. Civic involvement. Sense of place. Finding purpose. Community service. Service learning.
Liz Reina ’02 knows what it’s like to be homeless, to be hungry, to be without employment skills.
But she also knows how to help, in part because of what she gained during her time at Alfred University.
